Skype Call to Finland

On the 15th of December we called our friends in Finland from Room 10. This is our fifth class and they are ten and eleven years old. We spoke for forty minutes. We discussed Christmas traditions and Christmas food. We also showed them our school uniform. They don't wear them in Finland. We learnt that in Finland children like to ice-skate and ski. The temperature was minus 5 degrees Celsius outside in Finland and they showed us the car park with a snow bank in the background. This morning in Ireland it was 10 degrees. We sang some Christmas songs together and we said some poems.

This year we had great fun making Christmas cards to send to all our Erasmus+ partners. We visited the post office and sent them off to Europe. We were delighted to receive cards as well and we decorated our classroom with them. Thank you to everyone for sending them!

The hospitality has been wonderful. We are staying at the Hotel Paloma, which is close to the school. We are looking forward to playing some sports with the students this afternoon.

Mobility Walk 2016

As part of our getting healthy and fit theme a  walk was organised for everyone at school during September. Everyone took part and before we started off .the local newspaper took a photograph of the whole school.
We are very lucky to have a walking route very near us which we were able to use on the day.
The walk was organised by Ms Mc Elligott in association with Kerry County Council's Mobility Week initiative.

Ang Dorje Sherpa visits our School

As part of our Erasmus+ project we had a very special visitor to our school recently. Ang Dorje Sherpa is visiting Ireland at the moment and came to talk to Fourth Class in Room 14 about his experiences of growing up in Nepal and climbing Everest. He showed us a number of slides and explained what it was like to live in Nepal. He told us that he has climbed Mount Everest 18 times. This is a truly remarkable feat.

Life in Nepal is very different to life in the western world. The houses and countryside are very different. There are no roads and all goods must be carried. He showed us photos of the paths, houses, animals and people. The earthquake of 2015 wreaked devastation to his home town. He showed us photographs of the devastation and told us of his efforts to fund-raise to help the people affected.

He started working as a porter, carrying heavy loads, at the age of 12. He climbed Everest for the first time when he was 22 years of age. He now lives in The Hague with his wife and two children.

He was part of the expedition which in 1996 met with disaster on the mountain. On this expedition a freak storm caused the deaths of eight climbers. Since then a book called “Into Thin Air” and a film called “Everest” have been based on the events that took place on the mountain. Some of our students asked him questions about his life and experiences. We then took some photographs in the school garden.

Gaelic Football and Hurling

As part of the project GOAL we prepared a video to explain about our national sports. These sports are every popular and enjoy a huge following in Ireland. The sports are both amateur sports and are played in every parish in Ireland.

Healthy Eating Week

We had a healthy eating week at school in September. We looked at healthy food and studied the food pyramid. We had a visit from Mr. Fibre-man.

We also had a healthy Teddy Bear's Picnic in the hall. The senior classes invited their "Buddies" from Junior Infants to the picnic.

Here is an article from the local newspaper about the picnic!
